Appendix C: Sample Resumes and Cover Letters

Appendix C:

Sample Résumés and Cover Letters

Hey, I get it—navigating the road to redemption at the same time that you’re looking for work with a felony on your record isn’t a walk in the park. But it is very possible. So, worry not about the doubters and naysayers; you’re rebuilding, and that’s a great display of your own mighty awesomeness!

I’ve found some solid examples and tips on résumés for ex-felons, things like focusing on functional formats to highlight skills over timelines, skipping any mention of your record (save that for interviews), and emphasizing growth, volunteer work, or prison programs.

I’ve added another 20 unique versions based on real samples and best practices. These are tailored for common entry-level gigs that often hire folks in our shoes, like construction, warehouse, driving, admin, and retail. I’ve used placeholders (e.g., [Your Name]) so you can customize them. Keep your own résumé and cover letter to one page each and stay positive. Let’s crush this.

These samples are starting points. Tailor them to your experiences and each job you’re applying for. For more customization, consult reentry programs (see appendices A and B) or use tools like online résumé builders. Showcase your inspired wins by focusing on growth, skills, and contributions to stand out as a pro.

Securing gainful employment is a key to navigating the road to redemption. Many of life’s problems can disappear once you’re employed and earning a living. You will feel better about yourself. Your family and friends may start to trust you again.

Once you hear the words “How soon can you start?”, a feeling of intense excitement and happiness will come over you. You deserve it!

This appendix provides sample résumés and cover letters tailored for folks like us—formerly incarcerated individuals reentering the workforce. These templates emphasize skills, achievements, and growth while addressing gaps in employment history or criminal records in strategic and positive ways. Customize these samples with your details, focusing on your strengths, education, training (see chapter 21), and commitment to a positive future.

Use clear, professional language, and highlight the skills you learned while incarcerated (such as those learned through vocational programs or leadership in group activities). Remember, honesty is key. Address your record briefly if needed, pivoting to your rehabilitation and qualifications (see chapter 11 for tips). Always proofread and get feedback from a reentry program or mentor (see appendices A and B).

Cover Letter Tips

  • Structure: Include a header, introduction, body, and closing. Keep the full letter to three to four paragraphs.
  • Header: A “header” is the contact information block at the very top of a cover letter
  • Introduction: State the position and how you found it; briefly mention your interest.
  • Body: Highlight relevant skills and experiences; address gaps or records positively (e.g., “Following a period of personal growth, I’ve developed strong discipline and teamwork skills”). This should be one to two paragraphs.
  • Closing: Reiterate enthusiasm and provide contact info.
  • Tone: Be professional, positive, and concise, and focus on what you offer the employer.

Résumé Tips

  • Format: Use readable fonts (e.g., Arial or Calibri, 10–12 point).
  • Structure: Keep it to one page and include sections like Contact Information, Summary, Skills, Experience, Education/Training, and Certifications.
  • Contact Information: Imagine finding that job that screams you! A resume without your info isn’t going to get you any callbacks. Be sure to include your name, address (if in a permanent location) and a phone number.
  • Summary: A brief three-to-four-sentence overview highlighting your strengths and career goals.
  • Skills: List five to eight relevant skills (e.g., teamwork, problem-solving, vocational skills).
  • Experience: Focus on achievements; for gaps, use a functional format emphasizing skills over chronology.
  • Education/Training: Include GED, vocational certificates, or courses completed during or after incarceration.

Certifications:

The core purpose of a “Certification” is to give you a clear, marketable competence in a specific area of work. They help employers make faster decisions based on your specific Certification.

Addressing Gaps/Record:

If required, include a brief note in the summary or cover letter (e.g., “Dedicated to professional growth following a period of personal development”).
